WHO AM I? (2017)
for Flute, Clarinet in Bb, Violin, and Cello
Bb Clarinet = Real Me
Flute, Violin, Cello = Me Perceived by Others
Main Note = E (The first letter of EGO)
I. Versions of Me (c.4’40”)
– There is a difference between “Real Me” and “Me Perceived by Others”. In the beginning, people perceive me as intended- as “Real Me”. However, they start to see and judge me through their own point of view. My words and opinions do not resonate with others as I expected them to, and it gradually begins to confuse me. “Who am I?”
– The first piece begins with the note ‘E’, which indicates myself. The other four instruments play the same note with their own color. The note slowly changes to microtones and Major and minor 2nd, indicating the birth of “Confusion”.
II. Confusion (c.1’50”)
– As I begin to doubt my own identity, people consider me completely different from “Real Me”. Their perceptions are an utter contrast to my intentions. It seems everyone sees me the same way except for myself, and I feel like I am losing my real self.
III. Who am I? (c.4’30”) – Extension of I. Versions of Me
– Who am I? In the confusion, I cannot help but compromise to become who people think I am. I endeavor to find “Real Me”, while pretending to be “Me Perceived by Others”. However, I cannot find “myself” and continue in the vicious cycle.
