CONTINUITY AND DISCONTINUITY (2023)

for Flute, Clarinet in Bb, Horn in F, Trombone, 3 Percussionists, Harp, Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello, and Double Bass

We are living our present in the flow of history created by transitional events. In this huge flow caused by such events, each individual’s life creates fragments and shows discontinuous movement. Nowadays, with the development of technology, it got easier to recognize continuous movement more than ever before, and sometimes even discontinuous events of individuals transform into a continuous movement. In this piece, the movement of continuity made by these transformative events and discontinuity that signify the fragmented lives of individuals are expressed through music. As the fragmented movement encounters time in music, it disappears, gets merged, shattered into pieces, or even distorted by entirely changing its color, generating a discontinuous movement. But at the same time, it expands into a transitional movement and transforms into a continuous movement.

This piece was premiered by JSOM students on February 9th 2023 at Auer Hall, Indiana University
